Castelo Rodrigo

Promoting agritourism and connectivity in the Smart Historical Villages of Figueira

Description

Castelo Rodrigo smart village, part of the Smart Rural 27 initiative, is one of the 12 villages in the Network of Historical Villages covered by the Portugal Collective Efficiency Strategy (CES), a policy instrument under the EU Cohesion Policy for the economic development of low-density territories. The CES responds to the need to diversify and strengthen entrepreneurship associated with rural innovation and to promote innovation in tourism. Strategies have been put in place in Castelo Rodrigo to support the transition to a green economy, and to promote such aspects of the local culture as recipes, cooking methods and traditional products, contributing to the preservation of regional dishes and the promotion of the local hospitality.

The project for Castel Rodrigo developed in partnership with Altice Portugal has brought quality wireless internet (among other digital structures) to the village, with full coverage of optical fibre and free wi-fi. Furthermore, a beacon system has been installed that visitors can access through a smartphone application, providing them with georeferenced and contextual information, news of local events and other useful resources, as well as audio guides in several languages. The system is linked also to social media channels and other communication platforms for the dissemination of the local food culture (https://aldeiashistoricasdeportugal.com/en/aldeia/castelo-rodrigo/).
