Crystal.Eye

AI-based solution for quick, accurate and consistent analysis of produce quality

Description

Crystal.Eye is an optical imaging technology for the identification and discrimination of features and objects that supports the real-time conducting of produce quality inspections. Crystal.Eye™ automates and upgrades the manual quality control processes to ensure greater consistency, leading to reductions in waste, costs and time. The conveyor belt system moves the fresh produce through the imaging area where a high-resolution camera system captures detailed images, both externally and internally. An AI application then processes the images and identifies target features or objects with reliable accuracy. The scanner facilitates the real-time grading and sorting of produce, content identification, shelf-life prediction, and pesticide and fungicide detection.

Technology

  • Big data
  • Artificial intelligence (AI)
  • Artificial intelligence (AI)
  • Sensor
  • Desktop/web-based application

The main technologies used in Crystal.Eye to support quality control (QC) monitoring are hyperspectral optics and vision AI frameworks. Crystal.Eye has both hardware and software components that can operate independently or be integrated into existing conveyor or sorting systems. The hardware includes a conveyance system and an optical imaging technology that can scan and capture detailed images of produce internally and externally, while the software makes use of an AI algorithm and machine learning for the analysis of the images in real-time, and can identify various features of the produce.

Target

  • Large size farms
  • Private sector
  • Agriculture cooperatives

The main users of Crystal.Eye are those involved in the global distribution of fresh produce, such as large-scale farmers and cooperatives, as well as packaging and distribution centres that work with fresh produce.

Business model

  • Subscription

No upfront capital expenditures are required to access the system, being based rather on a monthly subscription model that is costed based on the volume of produce processed, the application features several different produce varieties.

Impact

Crystal.Eye can be considered a useful tool for processors and distributors of fresh produce in automating and increasing the efficiency of their quality control activities. The solution makes use of advanced optical imaging and AI for the real-time assessment of both external and internal product quality. This can enhance the accuracy of grading and sorting operations, while the digital records improve traceability from source to retail. As a by-product of its real-time analysis and digital record-keeping, Crystal.Eye could potentially aid in the reduction of QC-related costs.
