An overview of innovative tools to support beekeepers
Description
The resource entitled “Digital technologies and solutions for beekeeping” provides an overview of how digital technologies are used in beekeeping and introduces beekeepers to their benefits. The innovations introduced span from precision beekeeping, record-keeping, traceability and market access, and efficient information exchange and capacity development. The technologies discussed range from simple bee scales to high-end blockchain solutions, providing a factsheet that benefits small-scale beekeepers in rural areas as well as tech-savvy bee farm owners, particularly in accessing finance.
Technology
The resource highlights the role of tools such as hive monitoring devices, blockchain traceability systems, and record-keeping mobile apps in strengthening apiculture. Some solutions applies IoT-enabled hive scales, GPS trackers, blockchain for honey traceability, and record-keeping mobile apps with NFC and speech-to-text. Artificial intelligence supports image recognition for detecting Varroa mites and assessing hygienic behavior, while cloud services provide real-time data access and decision support. Other solutions mentioned include simple GSM hive scales and mobile apps for smallholder farmers to advanced sensor systems and intelligent software for larger farms and research purposes. The resource is available in English, French, Russian, Spanish, and Uzbek, and can be accessed and downloaded easily through the FAO knowledge product repository.
Target
The initiative’s main target beneficiaries are smallholders and professional beekeepers, particularly rural communities. Other users include cooperatives, research institutions, and farm advisors.
Business model
The resource can be easily downloaded and free of charge to any interested individuals and primary target users.
Impact
The solutions outlined in the resource serve as a factsheet, providing an overview of how different digital technologies are integrated into beekeeping. The resource enables farmers to understand the benefits, constructive and practical input, and ways to improve decisions to increase value and livelihoods within the beekeeping practices.
