GEO Land Degradation Neutrality (GEO-LDN)

Global Earth observation partnership for land degradation neutrality

Description

GEO Land Degradation Neutrality (GEO-LDN) is a global project supporting countries in monitoring and achieving land degradation neutrality (LDN) using Earth observation and geospatial data. GEO-LDN offers tools, capacity building, standards development, and access to satellite and in situ data to inform integrated land use planning and reporting under SDG target 15.3.

Technology

  • Remote sensing
  • Desktop/web-based application
  • Cloud
  • Internet of things (IoT)

GEO-LDN leverages remote sensing time-series, cloud-hosted GIS applications, desktop/web-based analytical platforms, and geospatial standards via the LDN Toolbox to provide high-resolution data, indicators, and capacity for land degradation assessment and reporting.

Target

  • Public sector
  • Academia and research institutions
  • Civil society organizations
  • Farm advisors
  • Private sector

GEO-LDN primarily supports public sector agencies and UNCCD national focal points, along with academia and civil society organizations, and rural communities involved in land management and reporting processes.

Business model

  • Donor support
  • Open source
  • Fully free

GEO-LDN is funded through donor support from GEO member contributions and UNCCD partnerships; services are provided freely to participating countries.

Impact

GEO-LDN has enabled the development of multi-decadal, high-resolution land degradation datasets; facilitated capacity building across 20 national teams and 325 participants; and supported restoration planning, including Benin’s roadmap to restore 1.25 million ha by 2030.

Partners

UNCCD Secretariat; Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development; German International Development Agency; Conservation International; International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals; Open Geospatial Consortium; Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development;
