Innovative Technology for Forest Protection in Montenegro
Digital tagging systems for forest protection
Description
The project strengthens forest protection by introducing a digital tree tagging system that improves monitoring and conservation in National Park Prokletije. The initiative responds to growing pressures from pests illegal logging and the absence of reliable forestry data
Technology
The initiative uses IoT-enabled tags for cloud-based data storage, remote sensing tools, sensor readers, and mobile applications to record and monitor forest information. Each tree receives a digital tag that records species age, health status, and geolocation which enables accurate monitoring of forest conditions. Digital tags transmit data into an organised forest inventory database which allows conservation staff to track changes in individual trees and analyse health risks environmental degradation and illegal logging threats.
Target
The project serves national park authorities, forestry institutions, conservation organizations, environmental agencies, and research actors working on environmental monitoring, agriculture, and biodiversity. It also benefits rural communities who depend on healthy forest ecosystems.
Business model
The project is financed through donor and institutional support which funds the procurement of digital tags of sensor readers on cloud technology and capacity building activities for forestry staff.
Impact
The initiative created a digital inventory of 20 000 trees, helping the project’s goal achieve the improvement of forest monitoring accuracy. According to resources online, a key achievement of the project is the establishment of a new technological unit within the Ministry of Agriculture, which will leverage drone technology for more efficient monitoring of agricultural practices and their impact on biodiversity. This unit will also support environmental agencies and organizations in enhancing biodiversity management.
