DescriptionOverview of the initiative and its approach.
Nosh is a personal food management app through which users log the expiration dates of their groceries, and are reminded to use them before they go off.
TechnologyTechnology used by the initiative.
The app, which can be downloaded from the Apple or Android Stores, uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse the user’s consumption and waste habits, and produces weekly analytics that can help the user reduce waste and save money on shopping. The app can scan barcodes and even grocery receipts directly into the app, but users can also input data manually. Then, once the contents of a user’s pantry and fridge are loaded into the app, they can search for existing recipes online that will help them use up their stock before it goes to waste. Two additional features are Nosh Daily, a companion blog to the app, and Nosh Shop, which allows restaurants to sell food at discounted rates that would otherwise be discarded.
TargetUsers, groups, or communities targeted by the initiative.
The main users of Nosh are consumers and hotel, restaurant and catering (HoReCa) operations.
Business modelHow the initiative delivers and sustains its value.
Nosh is free to download by users, while restaurants are subject to a 10 percent service charge. Nosh differs from other apps by allowing restaurants to sell their food at higher prices than other apps, which motivates more restaurants to make use of the app (and in return, reduce food waste) with the promise of more profit.
ImpactThe observed or intended effects of the initiative.
On the Nosh website, users report savings of GBP 40–50 (approx. USD 50) per month through the app.
