Optimilk

Digital platform supporting dairy farm management

Description

OPTIMILK is a web-based application designed to support dairy producers in optimizing rations for dairy cattle. The application enables users to formulate feed rations that meet defined nutritional requirements while minimizing feeding costs.

Technology

  • Desktop/web-based application

OPTIMILK operates as a web-based decision-support application based on linear programming, using the Simplex method to calculate optimal dairy cattle rations. The system allows users to define nutritional constraints, set minimum and maximum quantities for individual feeds or feed groups, and generate cost-efficient rations. The application includes functionalities for feed database management, livestock and meal records, planning feed needs over time, and sharing ration plans.

Target

  • Agriculture cooperatives
  • Farm advisors
  • Medium size farms
  • Smallholder farmers

The application targets dairy farmers and milk producers involved in cattle feeding and nutrition management. It supports users seeking to optimize feed rations, manage feed resources, and plan livestock nutrition using digital decision-support tools. The solution is designed for practical use at farm level and by producer organizations supporting dairy farmers.

Business model

  • Fully free
  • Donor support

Developed within the framework of the Market Agriculture Development Project II (FARMA II) with the financial support of Sweden and USAID, OPTIMILK is provided as a fully free digital application.

Impact

OPTIMILK aims to improve dairy farm management by enabling cost-efficient formulation of nutritionally balanced cattle rations through digital optimization methods. By supporting systematic feed planning and ration management, the application contributes to more informed decision-making in dairy nutrition and feeding practices. The solution has been recognized in an FAO report on good practices in digital agriculture in Europe and Central Asia.
