Road to the Future - Developing Competencies in Precision Agriculture

Pilot to build youth competencies in precision agriculture

Description

Road to the Future - Developing Competencies in Precision Agriculture is a 2025 SDG pilot initiative in Belarus (Mogilev region highlighted) that raises the prestige of agricultural professions and builds early competencies in precision agriculture for preschool and school-age children and youth through interactive workshops, lectures, and practical sessions in dedicated Precision Farming Centers.

Technology

  • GIS
  • GPS
  • Internet of things (IoT)
  • Artificial intelligence (AI)
  • Robotics
  • Sensor

Training is built around hands-on exposure to precision agriculture technologies: working with GIS maps, configuring and using autopilot systems, learning yield mapping approaches, exploring robotics and AI, and learning controlled-environment examples like smart greenhouses and weather stations.

Target

  • Civil society organizations
  • Public sector

The direct participants are children and youth, plus families connected to the agricultural sector. The implementing and host organizations include education and training institutions (academy/colleges) and sector partners aiming to build a future pipeline of digitally skilled agri-specialists.

Business model

Implemented under the Joint Project “Support to the Efforts of the Republic of Belarus in Nationalization and Localization of SDGs” with UNDP support and funding from the Government of the Russian Federation.

Impact

55 educational events delivered across five Precision Farming Centers; more than 1 000 children participated along with 38 families. Participants learned via interactive formats (including simulators and GIS practice). Children produced 40 videos that gained 5 000+ views on a dedicated YouTube channel. An interactive teaching aid “Modern Agriculture” was produced and adopted by educational institutions, with reported use in Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan; participating colleges planned ongoing integration from 2026.

Partners

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Belarus (support); Government of the Russian Federation (funding via the Joint Project); Belarusian State Agricultural Academy (host site for a Precision Farming Center); Smilovichi State College; Vidzovsky State College; Ullsky State College; Glubokoe State College

Four Betters

  • Better production
  • Better life

Sustainable Development Goals

  • SDG 4: Quality education
  • SDG 9: Industry, innovation, and infrastructure
