E-learning app aiding the delivery and monitoring of capacity building programmes
Description
The SUTTI Digital Solution Suite features three mobile and desktop applications that facilitate scalable capacity building across fragmented agricultural supply chains, connecting smallholder farmers, field officers, local buyers and industrial partners/stakeholders with agriculture production and post-harvest solutions. The suite provides access to e-learning modules for farming, peer support systems, up-to-date market prices, and supply chain impact and monitoring data. The SUTTI Digital Solution Suite is a digital operational tool created under the Ksapa SUTTI Initiative, and targets the delivery of hybrid capacity-building programmes through the provision of face-to-face and digital training to smallholders, thus boosting professional training, and monitoring the impact in the process. The Digital Solution Suite offers three different apps to suit different target users: the SUTTI Training Participants App, the SUTTI Reporting Dashboard and the SUTTI Operational Management System. The SUTTI Training Participants App facilitates the two-way transfer of information to and from smallholders and other users based on an off-road solution that is adaptable to rural and vulnerable populations and accessible by those who are less tech-savvy and illiterate. It incorporates an e-learning module, a chat-based helpline, a market price information database of daily commodity prices, a portal that increases the access and knowledge of users related to products and services, and a sales and transaction module through which users can keep track of their transactions. The SUTTI Reporting Dashboard app, on the other hand, allows industrial groups and sponsors to monitor all aspects of the capacity building programmes provided through the Training Participants App, with details of progress in training deployment, and assessments of the economic, environmental and social impacts of training based on key performance indicators, providing a better understanding of procurement by accessing farmer’s sales and transactions module. The SUTTI Operational Management System is the back-office tool that allows field instructors to manage the operational aspects of the applied programmes, including the enrolment of farmers, the management of training programmes and the operational follow-up procedures. Instructors are sourced in-house by Ksapa, utilizing its expert knowledge in the fields of sustainability, finance & investment, digital solutions, agronomy, development programs design and management and impact measurement.
Technology
The SUTTI Digital Solution Suite is based on web app technologies, and is supported by Android, iOS and KaşOS devices, computers and tablets, as well as other devices. SUTTI’s user Interface features a broad range of multimedia content (videos, diagrams, photos) as well as text-to-speech voiceovers to ease learning for tech-unsavvy and illiterate users. The SUTTI Training Participants App can be accessed both online and offline, with the option for push notifications, and is able to leverage the device's geolocation to customize the data feed with information relevant to the user's location. The e-learning catalogue can be accessed via the Training Participants App, either through a self-service download or by invitation from SUTTI training instructors. The courses can be either self-paced or instructor-led via the back-office app. The Training Participants App keeps track of participant involvement through occasional surveys conducted through the learning app, and the statistical results are incorporated into the SUTTI Reporting Dashboard.
Target
The primary users of the SUTTI Training Participants App solution are smallholder farmers, although the app can also be used by other parties, including agricultural workers and local buyers in the agricultural supply chain. The Training Participants App is currently being piloted in the Bahasa language, applied to a 1000-farm (approximately 4000 beneficiaries) sample in the Jambi province of Indonesia, and a 6000-farm project is projected to be launched in Sri- Lanka in both the Sinhalese and Tamil languages. Future projects are under evaluation in Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. The main users of The SUTTI Reporting Dashboard are industrial groups and sponsors with an interest in monitoring all aspects of the capacity-building and training programmes provided through the Training Participants App. The SUTTI Operational Management System is utilized for the management of both applications.
Business model
The SUTTI Digital Solution Suite was funded under the Ksapa impact investment initiative, which is aimed at sourcing or investing in opportunities that generate returns on investment while also contributing to the fulfilment of the Sustainable Development Goals. The digital tools are typically free to use for farmers, since access is generally provided by industrial groups and other public and private sources of funding, or partners of the Ksapa group. The SUTTI Training Participants App is free to download and use by farmers, while sponsors pay for participant licenses, as well as for access to the Operational Management System tool.
Impact
According to the website, the SUTTI Digital Solution Suite can support farmers with improved technical, business, and soft skills, can increase crop yields through the dissemination of best practices, and can increase farmer revenues through diversification. It is especially useful for those in isolated and remote locations where market access is limited, serving as a source of knowledge and innovation through accessible learning modules. The Training Participants App also reaches some farmers indirectly through peer-to-peer chats, positively influencing the practices of five to ten non-participant farmers, thus boosting SUTTI’s impact. Moreover, SUTTI can also positively impact climate change (carbon sequestration & GHG emissions avoidance) through innovative technical itineraries with positive carbon impacts resulting from reduced irrigation, fewer inputs, less tillage, diversification & waste valuation. The 10-year objective (by 2030) of SUTTI is to reach 1 million beneficiaries, to provide 5 million hours of training, to increase farmers’ revenues by EUR 150 million, and the sequestration/avoidance of 4.5 million t CO2 in carbon emissions.
