Description
The aim of Too Good To Go is to save food that’s “Too Good To Go”, being a smartphone application that connects customers to restaurants and stores with unsold food surplus. The app serves as a marketplace connecting businesses with surplus foods with consumers looking to rescue their meals. Rather than discarding surplus foods at the end of the day, the producers foods can sell them off a reduced retail price (typically one-third of the original price) and collected by consumers from the store at a pre-set time (often 30 minutes before closing). The consumer can download the app freely and browse the available offers in their area via an integrated map, make their selection and pay for the goods through the app. To collect the meal, the customer simply presents the in-app order confirmation voucher to the store or restaurant.
Technology
The mobile application, which has both Android and iOS versions, shows the participating outlets and details what sort of food (baked foods, meals, produce, vegan food) is available within a certain radius and in a specified timeslot. Suppliers (restaurants, takeaways, supermarkets, bakeries and other food outlets) can access the Too Good To Go application via phone or computer and list the surplus foods they have on offer at a discounted price, which can then be browsed by potential buyers nearby. Payments can be made through the app using services such as Apple Pay and PayPal. The Too Good To Go app has been listed among the top 10 most downloaded apps worldwide related to food and beverages.
Target
Users of the app include both consumers and food producers. The app had more than 57 million users as of 2022, with 154 000 participating food producers.
Business model
The app is free to download and use by consumers. The primary source of revenue for the creators is the commission they take from the producer for any meals sold through the app (restaurants, bakeries, grocery shops, etc).
Impact
The value to the consumer comes from their access to high-quality restaurant food sold at up to a 70 percent discount. The company claims that more than 139 million meals have been sold through the app to date, contributing to the reduction of CO2 production. The app also provides an opportunity to users to discover restaurants, bakeries, hotels and grocery stores that they would not otherwise make purchases from. The value of the app to suppliers comes from the sale for surplus food that would otherwise go to waste, although at a reduced price, contributing to revenues. Furthermore, partnering with TGTG boosts the corporate social responsibility image of companies.
