Vinery Garac Digital Vineyard Pilot

Digital viticulture pilot to support precision vineyard management

Description

Vinery Garac Digital Vineyard Pilot is a precision agriculture project carried out to optimise grape production through digital tools, and sensor-based monitoring. The project is part of the 18 pilot implementations across European countries and funded under the Horizon 2020 initiative. The project covers over 5 000 square meters, where measurements were collected through the AgroNET platform.

Technology

  • Internet of things (IoT)
  • Sensor
  • Remote sensing
  • Cloud
  • Mobile app
  • GIS
  • Big data
  • Desktop/web-based application
  • Artificial intelligence (AI)

The pilot uses IoT sensors for temperature humidity, soil moisture, and disease risk detection. It integrates remote sensing imagery, cloud-based data processing, and dashboards that support real-time decision making. The system offers weather-driven alerts of irrigation guidance and crop condition monitoring, which helps the vineyard refine management strategies. The data collected was processed and visualized through the AgroNET platform.

Target

  • Smallholder farmers
  • Medium size farms
  • Large size farms
  • Private sector
  • Agriculture cooperatives
  • Rural communities

The initiative targets vineyard owners, grape producers, cooperatives, and agricultural service providers who aim to improve productivity and sustainability in the wine sector.

Business model

  • Donor support
  • Fee for service

The pilot is supported through donor funded research under Horizon 2020 by participating in vineyards adopting digital services on a fee for service basis after the pilot period.

Impact

According to resources and interviews available online, after installation of equipment in 2020, key benefits of the project include the successful obtainment of data, enabling the management of agro-technical operations. Project participants also expect to achieve precise irrigation operations after purchasing meters for flow and water consumption.
