AgriThon
Competition and incubation platform for agriculture startups, promoting innovative agritech and rural business ideas
Description
AgriThon is a competition platform, and a capacity-building and startup-incubation project designed to support innovative agriculture and agribusiness solutions in Armenia. The competition is implemented by the ICARE-Armenia Foundation within the framework of the USAID-funded AGRI CAMP programme. The project provides mentorship, training and competitive seed support for young agripreneurs, researchers, cooperatives and early-stage teams working on digital agriculture concepts, sustainable production practices and value-chain improvements. Meanwhile, AgriThon 2 explored innovations such as producing eco-friendly can straw hanging mushroom bags, a digital system that automatically informs actors about adverse conditions, among others.
Technology
The project includes device and bio-packaging from mycelium as a sustainable material technology. The projects operate through a web-based platform acting as an online community used for applications, selection stages, mentorship, training delivery and project monitoring. Digital tools, including desktop/web-based interfaces and communication platforms, support learning, project development and coordination among experts, students and agribusiness teams.
Target
AgriThon supports students, agripreneurs, smallholder and medium-size farmers, rural communities, cooperatives and private-sector innovators seeking to develop agribusiness or agritech concepts. Participants benefit from technical training, mentoring, incubation support and opportunities for grants under the AGRI CAMP framework.
Business model
AgriThon is funded through donor support from USAID under the AGRI CAMP program and is implemented by ICARE. Participation for applicants is free of charge, and selected teams receive capacity-building, incubation services and in-kind support without direct payment requirements.
Impact
AgriThon has supported multiple cohorts of agricultural innovators. According to AGRI CAMP reporting, more than 43 startup teams participated in AgriThon 1, with 15 teams advancing to incubation. More than 200 students and graduates, 1100 cooperative/SME members and 1 300 women agripreneurs are expected to benefit through skills development and agribusiness capacity enhancement.
