Bee Varroa Scanner (BeeVS)
AI-based scanner for counting Varroa destructors
DescriptionOverview of the initiative and its approach.
BeeVS is an electronic scanner that is able to photograph beehive trays and count the number of varroa mites using a trained artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm. The scanner collects standard statistical data on the spread of varroa across the entire apiary, contributing to a reduction in the number of varroa treatments by limiting applications to families that show a critical infestation threshold; reducing the time needed to carry out checks; documenting the spread of varroa at an apiary level; and identifying varroa outbreaks at the beginning of the beekeeping season, thus avoiding the infestation of all colonies in the apiary.
TechnologyTechnology used by the initiative.
BeeVS technology uses a scanner and AI algorithm to count and monitor over time the number of parasites in each beehive.
TargetUsers, groups, or communities targeted by the initiative.
The technology targets private entities, such as foundations or companies, as well as beekeepers and research and academic organizations.
Business modelHow the initiative delivers and sustains its value.
AI-powered Bee Varroa Scanner can be purchased or provided as service to beekeepers, farm advisors, research centres or private companies. The scanner is made available by beekeepers adopting beehives via the “Sustain hive adoption” project promoted by the partner “17tons”. When provided as a service, the cost for each sheet scansion varies from country to country.
ImpactThe observed or intended effects of the initiative.
The website reports that as of September 2024, Bee Varroa Scanners had counted over 6 million varroa mites since their first adoption, scanned over 50 000 beehives and saved around 700 hours of manual work.
