Brežani and Tršće

Pilot village under the FAO Digital Villages Initiative (DVI)

Description

The Brežani-Tršće rural community is situated in the picturesque basins of two rivers, Zgošća and Trstionica. The key agricultural assets include greenhouse vegetable cultivation, on-farm dairy operations with milk processing, and cattle husbandry, in which a cow-calf system is employed. Brežani-Tršće’s robust cultural-historical legacy, well-developed infrastructure, and promising entrepreneurial and tourism opportunities offer significant potential. Rich in such natural resources as fertile land and pristine water sources, as well as cultural and historical landmarks, Brežani-Tršće is uniquely positioned for the championing of sustainable agricultural practices and for capitalizing on the developing agritourism market. Under the “Digital Villages Initiative in Action” (TCP/RER/3905) FAO project, digital scales, greenhouse monitoring and control systems, and a marketing website are implemented to support local farmers.

In Brežani-Tršće, DVI project combines technologies to encourage innovative agricultural practices and support the development of agritourism. Digital scales for beekeepers enable accurate tracking of honey production, enhancing efficiency and quality. Greenhouse monitoring systems provide real-time data on environmental conditions, while advanced greenhouse monitoring and control systems allow farmers to actively manage temperature, humidity, and irrigation, ensuring optimal growing conditions and improved crop yields. The village website not only markets local agricultural products but also highlights the region’s cultural, historical, and natural attractions, including cycling routes and points of interest for tourists, fostering agritourism and creating new economic opportunities for the community. Additionally, QR codes are being placed on local products, linking consumers directly to the website to discover more about the producers and the region.
