Food safety standards certification and food production auditing demonstration web applications for students

Description

Khujand Polytechnic Institute uses the GapSoft and HACCPSoft educational web applications to provide its students with practical demonstrations of the processes involved in the certification and auditing of food products in line with food safety standards. The study modules focus on food production standards at a farm level (Global G.A.P. – good agricultural practices) and food processing standards at a processing level (HACCP – hazard analysis critical control points). Students can use the educational web applications to view certified production processes in a virtual environment, in which all the production phases are tracked and production documents are recorded, while field visits can be carried out to check that the true situation corresponds to the declared one. Food safety certificates issued at the end of the production process certify that the food complies with safety standards. The web applications were developed under the "Higher Education for Central Asia Food Systems and Standards" project implemented by the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, in cooperation with Hilfswerk International. The project was funded by the European Union within the framework of the program "ERASMUS+" and serves the needs of small- and medium-sized enterprises in the education of highly qualified professionals who are familiar with international food safety systems and standards.

Impact

The practical GapSoft and HACCPSoft tools upgrade existing higher education programmes and courses through the provision of content that responds to the needs of the modern labour market, and can create the preconditions required by companies to introduce quality systems to their operations that respond to the requirements of foreign markets, thus increasing the competitiveness of their enterprises.
