The National Pathway for food systems transformation in support of the 2030 agenda in the Republic of Armenia aims to enhance the efficacy of the agricultural sector, improve food safety, encourage the introduction of modern technologies, and increase the export volumes and revenue positions of all players in the value chain, primarily small commercially oriented farmers, producer groups, processors and exporters. The policy lists seven strategic priorities that have been defined specifically for Armenia’s agriculture sector: (1) increase the competitiveness and efficacy of Armenia’s agriculture sector, (2)ensure food safety; (3) develop local markets and increase exports; (4) improve food security and nutrition; (5) develop the nation’s institutional and human capacity; (6) support sustainable rural development; and, (7) promote digital agriculture and technological innovations. For the last of these items, the document focuses on such specific objectives as investments into national digital agriculture platforms and digitalization initiatives, promoting the broader (non-digital) innovation and uptake of agricultural technologies, furthering the digitalization of the government agriculture systems and developing the digital capacity of the Ministry, and increasing the capacity of farmers and the education system related to digital agriculture and innovation.
TechnologyTechnology used by the initiative.
The policy proposes the integration of several technologies to address the challenges identified within the Armenian agriculture and food system. An electronic portal providing updated and precise information on agricultural lands would facilitate access to land information, geological maps and data on the qualitative properties of land. GIS systems can support the collection and dissemination of land data among stakeholders in support of business activities. Geospatial tools, on the other hand, can augment and enhance decision-making through spatial analyses, thus optimizing and empowering business functions and processes and creating a strong framework for the management of data, enhanced customer services and increased awareness of healthy eating while leveraging emerging technology trends in support of the digital transformation. A national livestock registry and livestock surveillance/traceability platform, on the other hand, would increase the quality of veterinary services and improve animal health and animal identification systems. Finally, digital technologies and monitoring systems would improve plant protection system regulations and support the enforcement of pest and disease controls.
