PHENIX

Web application for the donation or sale of unsold food

Description

PHENIX is a platform through which consumers can buy surplus food from local businesses at a reduced price. PHENIX works in partnership with charities or other operations that can access the PHENIX app to learn what is available in real time and collect what they need according to a schedule established . PHENIX expanded its activities in 2024 with the launch of its own outlets under the name “NOUS anti gaspi (We are anti-waste)” specialized in the sale of products with short expiry dates, fruit and vegetables with appearance or size defects, downgraded goods or overstock.

Users access the PHENIX app and make selections from the discounted foods announced by nearby stores, with global positioning system (GPS) support, helping save food that would otherwise be discarded.

The main users of PHENIX are manufacturers, producers, neighbourhood shops, producers, supermarkets, restaurants, wholesalers, event organizers and industries.

Consumers can use the PHENIX app to purchase products that would normally go to waste from outlets close to their home or workplace. A EUR 20/month subscription gives users access to a weekly 3 kg basket, or a one-time basket purchase can be made for EUR 6, with goods selected on the app from what is available close to their locations. PHENIX takes EUR 1 commission for every basket sold.

Impact

As of June 2024, PHENIX claims to have saved 150 million meals, or 10 million t of food, that would otherwise have been wasted. It states that almost 2 million baskets of food have been sold to date through the PHENIX app, equating to savings of 15 000 t in CO2 emissions based on an estimated 4.5 kg in savings for each basket.
