Pigxcel™

AI camera-based pig weighing

Description

Pigxcel leverages camera technology and AI to automatically weigh pigs, enabling efficient growth monitoring, easier carcass weighing, and optimizing pig production profitability.

Technology

  • Artificial intelligence (AI)
  • Desktop/web-based application
  • Sensor
  • Artificial intelligence (AI)

The solution employs ceiling-mounted imaging systems serving as camera sensors combined with AI‑driven computer vision algorithms to monitor individual and group pig weights and growth trends. The system delivers data through a web-based interface suitable for desktop and mobile access. The 2025 feature, Pigxcel™ ID, further extends capability by identifying individual animals, enabling targeted health monitoring and optimized selection for slaughter.

Target

  • Large size farms
  • Medium size farms

The initiative supports medium and large pig producers who require scalable, data-driven weight monitoring solutions. occurred across Sweden, Norway, Mexico, Australia, and Finland.

Business model

  • Subscription

Funding for development originated from regional innovation and agricultural programs: Agroväst and RISE facilitated prototype development and testing, and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) provided EUR 380 000 in support. The initiative is funded through public-sector and programme-based investment, and the amount made available is publicly stated.

Impact

The overall aim of the Pigxcel is to optimize pig production efficiency, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability through automated, non-invasive monitoring. According to the resources online, the system also improves feed consumption accuracy, reduces labor strain, and mitigates greenhouse gas emissions by enabling slaughter at optimal timing.
