Siberian and Belarusian Scientists to Boost Urban Farm Yields with Digital Solutions

Russia–Belarus R&D project developing LED phytolighting and a multi-factor Digital Twin to raise vertical (multi-tier) urban farm yields and cut energy use.

DescriptionOverview of the initiative and its approach.

Researchers from Siberian Federal University (Russia) and Belarusian partners are collaborating to improve multi-tier (vertical) plant cultivation systems used in urban farms and indoor agriculture. The goal is to increase the yield and quality of lettuce grown in controlled environments. The team studies LED phytolighting impacts on red-leaf lettuce yields and develops a digital model (Digital Twin) to optimize energy consumption in vertical city farms.

TechnologyTechnology used by the initiative.

  • Sensor
  • Internet of things (IoT)

The project develops LED modules and power sources for phyto-irradiators with feedback and control loops, then builds a multi-factor Digital Twin to tune lighting regimes and energy use while maintaining yield and product quality.

TargetUsers, groups, or communities targeted by the initiative.

  • Academia and research institutions

The project targets urban farmers and research institutions. It supports the development and testing of digital solutions for urban agriculture.

Business modelHow the initiative delivers and sustains its value.

As a research collaboration, the project is funded through research grants and institutional support. Results and technologies developed may be commercialized or made available for wider use.

ImpactThe observed or intended effects of the initiative.

The project contributes to the development of digital solutions for urban farming, potentially improving yields and resource efficiency. It supports research collaboration and knowledge exchange between Belarusian and Russian scientists.
