in upgrading and functionalizing information technology systems and increasing its capacity to implement an integrated approach to food safety
Description
The project entitled “Support to Kosovo Veterinary and Food Agency (KVFA)” is an EU-funded project supporting Kosovo in developing capacities and tools for an integrated food safety and traceability management and control system. The initiative includes activities such as the implementation of (i) a Food Control and Traceability Management System (FCMS) within KVFA services and (ii) a Laboratory Information System (LIMS) for food safety and animal health laboratory functions, including requirements analysis, architecture, development, testing, training and go-live support.
Technology
The system development followed a structured delivery chain covering business analysis and requirements specifications, system architecture, development, validation/integration testing, user acceptance testing, training and go-live. In addition, a dedicated laboratory workflow solution (LIMS) was designed and implemented to cover stages of laboratory work and practical use with the beneficiary.
Target
Direct beneficiaries are KVFA inspectors and services and laboratory staff using FCMS and LIMS to manage food control, traceability and laboratory operations. The broader beneficiaries include consumers and food business operators by aiming to improve traceability across the “farm to fork” food control system.
Business model
The project was financed by EU donor support with a published contract value of EUR 1 459 000 and implemented by Computas AS. Meanwhile, the public data on the project is suggesting delivery as a public service capability for KVFA.
Impact
The project has established an operational FCMS within KVFA services and design and implementation of ana LIMS for food safety and animal health laboratory work. Other expected impacts include improved traceability, more consistent controls, and strengthened institutional capacity for integrated food safety management in Kosovo.
