Description

xFarm is an integrated system created around mobile and web apps that supports farmers in the management of their field operations, soils, machinery, irrigation, crop protection, livestock, documentation, economic accounting and logistics. The system, which was devised by Matteo Vanotti, a farmer himself, seeks to simplify the collection and analysis of data, thereby reducing paperwork, enhancing efficiency and supporting data-driven decisions. Built on a robust foundation that combines free Cloud-based farm management software, IoT field sensors known as xSense, and premium services, xFarm offers a multi-layered approach to modern agriculture. The application's management software simplifies administrative tasks with its intuitive interface, while its IoT sensors capture crucial field data in real-time supporting such functions as disease anticipation, water optimization and pesticide reduction. Adding a layer of security and transparency, xFarm makes use of blockchain technologies to trace all field operations, and leverages Cloud computing to provide users with flexible access to their data from any location. Furthermore, the application utilizes remote sensing to deliver vital field data directly to farmers' smartphones, including vegetation indices and prescription maps for variable-rate fertilization. Accessible in six languages and available in a free version, xFarm is a versatile tool that is suitable for farms of all sizes, needs and financial capacities.

xFarm operates as a web-based app that can be accessed via a computer or both iOS and Android devices. It is designed to aid agricultural management and features several integrated components aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and data-driven decision-making by farmers. One key component is its management software, which facilitates simplified data management and document creation through a user-friendly interface, drawing data from IoT sensors known as xSense that capture field data in real-time for multiple purposes. The sensors contribute to the application's internal database and are instrumental in anticipating potential plant disease outbreaks, optimizing water usage for irrigation and minimizing the use of pesticides. The software reduces user interactions, allowing data input with just a few clicks. Additionally, the platform employs blockchain technologies to ensure the transparency and traceability of all field operations. The applied Cloud computing capabilities provide users with flexible and agile access to their data from any location. Finally, xFarm utilizes remote sensing technologies, enabling farmers to access valuable field data on their smartphones, including vegetation indices and prescription maps for variable-rate fertilization, while allowing comparisons of the data from different fields or timeframes.

The innovative nature of these technologies makes xFarm more easily accessible by those who are more technologically savvy. xFarm works with all other stakeholders in the agribusiness supply chain that with the potential to benefit from the digitization of agriculture, including technicians, supporting their work to improve agronomic efficiency; cooperatives, for improvements in the traceability; and for the machinery industry, as a ready-made platform for integration with their machinery.

The platform is available in free and paid package subscription versions, depending on the needs of the user. It comes with customizable premium modules that are suitable for a variety of farming needs. Packages range from the Essential plan at EUR 195/year (USD 209) to the comprehensive Professional package at EUR 2400/year (USD 2570). All prices exclude VAT. The core features of the plans include Agroweather, providing specialized weather forecasts; Alerts as real-time notifications; and PPPs Data for detailed insights into the Plant Protection Products. These features are complemented by field management, machinery tracking, and document storage tools, among others. The Premium modules offer additional specialized tools, while the Plus, Decision, and Professional packages include such as Finance and Satellite PRO. More advanced features, such as Advanced Reports, Data Connection, the PRO Weather Station and the Leaf Wetness Sensor are available in the Decision and Professional plans. The Professional plan stands as the most comprehensive suite, including such exclusive features as the Asset Manager and Soil Moisture Sensor. A free version of xFarm is available for those looking to start with the most basic features, accessible, via mobile app or web registration. Custom solutions are also available for large or specialized farms.

Impact

By 2020, xFarm’s user base had grown from 4000 to 30 000, and today, more than 32 000 farmers use xFarm to digitalize their farm operations. The company has 50 000 followers on Facebook, and more than 3000 followers on Instagram and LinkedIn. The company website claims that the xFarm has contributed to the avoidance of 27 141 tonnes of CO2 equivalent and 3501 602 m3 of water.
