ABC-Map

Geospatial application supporting environmental impact assessment

Description

ABC-Map is a geospatial application supporting holistic environmental assessments of projects, policies and investments in agriculture, forestry and other land-use sectors. Users can use ABC-Map to gain a better understanding of their initiative context, to design activities tailored to their goals, and to assess the potential impact of their proposed actions in respect of adaptation, biodiversity and carbon footprint.

Technology

  • Desktop/web-based application
  • GIS
  • Remote sensing

ABC-Map is an open and freely available web-app. The Adaptation section provides climatic data (temperature, precipitation, extreme weather) and geophysical information (elevation, terrain, water occurrence). The Biodiversity section, on the other hand, reports land use changes over time; Mean Species Abundance (MSA), as a measure of biodiversity intactness; natural capital, as an expression of the value of ecosystem services in USD, and allows users to geo-localize key biodiversity and protected areas. Finally, the Carbon section offers information on carbon stocks and the social value of carbon. ABC-Map uses peer-reviewed datasets and methodologies endorsed by international scientific bodies, and requires little to no on-the-ground data from the users.

Target

  • Other

The users of the ABC-Map are primarily project managers, policymakers, researchers, environmental organizations and practitioners involved in climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation and carbon management.

Business model

  • Fully free

ABC-Map is developed and supported by FAO.

Impact

ABC-Map can help assess climate risk, biodiversity impacts, ecosystem services and carbon stocks, supporting decision-making related to sustainable land use, conservation strategies and climate-related policies.
