Agricultural Market Information System
Platform for the monitoring and analysis of EU agri-food markets
Description
The Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS) is an Information and communication technology (ICT)-based platform used by the European Commission, the Member States, and agri-food trading actors operating within and outside the European Union to report and access visual data related to agricultural markets, such as prices, production volume, and imports and exports. European Union countries communicate the data to the Commission, which makes the information available on its agri-food data portal and EU Market Observatories. As of November 2024, the existing agri-food data portal will be expanded to include the most recent indicators, making them available to all online, including, for example, data on the costs and margins associated with different stages of the food chain.
Technology
AMIS has two components: 1) a web-based application for the inputting of data, available only to EU nations and their delegated operators; and 2) a platform presenting visual data, open to all. The platform is navigated via a dashboard and provides an overview of the current situation in each sector, offering comparisons with previous years, while an Application Programming Interface (API) facilitates searches and access to the data via a “Machine to Machine” interface.
Target
The main target users of AMIS are policy makers, agri-food actors along the entire value chain, researchers and civil society organizations operating both in the European Union and beyond. Rural communities and famers of any size can access the data and benefit from the greater food market transparency.
Business model
AMIS is co-funded by the European Union and its Member States. Access to the agri-food data portal and the EU Market Observatories of AMIS is free of charge to all.
Impact
AMIS seeks to improve the knowledge and regulatory capacity of public authorities in the agri-food markets and to address the lack of market transparency and information asymmetries in the agri-food markets, especially during times of high price volatility and market crisis. AMIS is expected to contribute to efficiency in the markets, and to provide farmers and other agri-food actors with access to the most accurate data.
