Animal Identification and Movement Control Scheme (AIMCS)

National system for livestock identification, registration, and movement control

Description

The Animal Identification and Movement Control Scheme (AIMCS) is a system that provides livestock identification, registration, and movement control through ear tags and a centralized State Database (SDB). The solution assists in creating a reliable system for tracking animals across the country to ensure transparency and accountability in the livestock sector. Through AIMCS, farmers need to register their farm, slaughterhouse, and cattle market.

Technology

  • Desktop/web-based application
  • Sensor
  • GPS

AIMCS combines physical animal identification through ear tags with a digital registration and monitoring platform, the State Database (SDB). Farmers receive unique alphanumeric codes on ear tags for each animal, supported by cattle passports for official documentation. Movements between farms, slaughterhouses, and markets are registered and authorized only with proper records entered in the SDB.

Target

  • Smallholder farmers
  • Medium size farms
  • Large size farms
  • Public sector

The initiative targets livestock farmers, slaughterhouses, markets, and veterinary authorities who are required by law to register animals and movements. Farmers and livestock owners benefit from access to official animal documentation and compliance with trade regulations, while government veterinarians and farm advisors use the system to monitor animal health, disease outbreaks, and food safety compliance.

Business model

  • Fully free

AIMCS is fully financed and managed by the Veterinary Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina under government and public funding. The system operates as a national public service to guarantee universal livestock traceability and compliance.

Impact

The overall aim of AIMCS is to safeguard animal health, strengthen disease control, and ensure food safety through reliable livestock traceability.
