Description
BeeOdiversity leverages biomonitoring tools by combining nature-based solutions that leverage bees as natural drones to collect samples. The initiative itself acts as core environmental health indicator by tracking the presence of wild bees. According to BeeOdiversity, their solution was inspired by the lack of low-cost, scalable, non-intrusive solution to monitor biodiversity and agricultural pollinators at a parcel level.
Technology
The initiative deploys solutions such as BeeOtel, a device capable of monitoring wildbees in an automated way. The occupancy rate and types of bees present in the BeeOtel provide insights on the state of the environment and improvement that requires immediate action. Additionally, the BeeOmonitoring trap collects pollens gathered by domestic bees, enabling the analysis of pollen at a landscape level. Lastly, the initiative leverages its own eDNA method where pollen analysis facilitates the identification of plant species and pollutants that are later analyzed by AI and human experts.
Target
The initiative targets to support farmers and landowners, stakeholders and principals in the food and beverage industry, and policy-makers in their nature-positive agenda. Similarly, BeeOdiversity encourages these stakeholders to adopt sustainable, and biodiversity-friendly practices such as agroecology and regenerative agriculture. As of June 2025, BeeOdiversity catered over 100 customers in more than 25 countries.
Business model
The initiative offers a service-based model. BeeOdiversity's customers can subscribe to biomonitoring programs via multi-year contracts and licenses to access remote sensing services and recommendations through a web platform. The solution is co-funded by the European Innovation Council program.
Impact
According to BeeOdiversity, the initiative monitors 150 000 hectares yearly with observed increase in biodiversity of up to 400 percent and a reduction in pollution of up to five times. The initiative patented the BeeOtel, BeeOmonitoring trap, and its own eDNA method based on pollen analysis.
