Description
Cula is a digital platform for monitoring, reporting, and verifying (MRV) focused on scaling carbon removal. The platform validates real-time data across the carbon removal supply chain, enabling traceability, standardized reporting, and the generation of verified carbon credits. Its functionalities include an open data interface (Carbon Hub) for scientific validation, as well as integrated tools for tracking operations, supporting certification processes, and optimizing project performance. The solution also ensures open data access through Carbon Hub where Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) science community can verify and account for. Specifically, Cula aids in integrating daily operation, tracking services, certification and efficiency optimization to build trust with buyers and partners.
Technology
Cula’s technology is built around a digital MRV system that integrates machine, sensors, and operational data to enable real-time monitoring and verification of carbon removal activities. The platform supports carbon removal pathways such as biochar technology, which involves converting organic materials such as agriculture waste into biochar through pyrolysis. The biochar product is capable of effectively sequestering carbon when added to the soil for efficient carbon dioxide removal strategies. The data generated throughout the biochar production and application process are captured and integrated into Cula’s MRV system to enable continuous monitoring and verification. Such data-to-platform integration enables the issuance of Cula credit that enable buyers to credibly demonstrate their commitment to addressing climate change. Specifically, Cula creates these credits through the integration of machine and sensory data and by transparently showcasing carbon removal. Then, using API infrastructure, registries, marketplaces, and carbon removal buyers can integrate carbon removal processes.
Target
The primary users of Cula are carbon removal project developers, particularly those working with biochar and other emerging carbon removal technologies, who require robust monitoring and verification systems to generate certified carbon credits. The platform also serves carbon credit buyers, registries, and research institutions by providing access to transparent, high-quality data for validation, certification, and informed decision-making in carbon markets.
Business model
Cula applies for a fee-for-service model, generating revenue through platform usage fees, certification and data verification services, and transaction commissions for verified carbon removal credits processed by its own system. Cula is also co-funded by the European Union Project “Remove”.
Impact
Cula aims to bridge the gap between real-life processes and carbon credit to showcase effective carbon removal projects across the globe. As demonstrated in the Cular Carbon Hub, the platform tracked approximately 52.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent through its monitored carbon removal processes. Some of the documented sinks include projects in Germany, Sweden, and Taiwan. As of October 2025, Cula also plans to explore other carbon removal technologies such as enhanced rock weathering and direct air capture.
