Description
Kitche is a free home food waste app and platform that targets the optimization of long-term food waste behaviours. Kitche has a broad range of features that support the reduction of food waste, such as receipt scanning to import food to the app, food waste tracking, smart recipe searches, and helpful tips and hacks to cut down on food waste. Kitche supports its users by sharing complex data on food waste behaviours, thus contributing to the development of policy interventions and savings for consumers and businesses alike.
Technology
Kitche is available as a web-based or mobile app, and is integrated with a third-party food ontology and a semantic recipe search engine.
Target
The main users of Kitche are food consumers.
Business model
Kitche is free for consumers, operating as a business-to-business-to-customer (B2B2C) business model that supports partnering among local authorities and supermarkets, etc. Kitche collects anonymized, aggregated data on consumption and waste habits which it shares with its partners under a rolling contract with a minimum initial term. The aim is to support local authorities in reducing food waste management costs and delivering informed and impactful interventions that would otherwise necessitate costly compositional food waste analyses.
Impact
Kitche is recommended by the Daily Mirror, Sun, Good Housekeeping, Prima, Guardian, Times and Telegraph publications and has been downloaded more than 40 000 times to date. It has been nominated multiple times for App of the Day, and has been awarded and delivered a competitive nationwide government project.
