The publication consists of a multi-country mapping and assessment of affordable and transferrable climate-smart technologies aimed at addressing food security and climate resilience challenges faced by smallholder farmers. Implemented through a tripartite collaboration between FAO, IFAD and IsDB, the initiative identifies technology options that can be adapted across different agro-ecological and socio-economic contexts to support sustainable agrifood systems.
Technology
The publication assesses climate-smart technologies across six thematic areas: post-harvest technologies to reduce food loss and waste; water management and water-saving technologies; sustainable pest control and crop management solutions; e-commerce and digital market access tools; financial technologies supporting access to credit and services; and renewable energy technologies for agricultural and agribusiness use.
Target
The initiative supports policymakers, extension services and development actors with evidence on suitable climate-smart technologies. As of February 2026, the publication had been viewed 732 times on the FAO Open Knowledge platform.
Business model
The publication was funded and coordinated through a partnership between FAO, IFAD and IsDB and delivered as a publicly available analytical and knowledge product.
Impact
The initiative produced a comprehensive inventory and assessment framework for affordable and transferrable climate-smart technologies relevant to smallholder farmers in 10 countries. The results aim to provide an evidence base to support informed decision-making, prioritization and future investment in technologies that can enhance resilience, reduce losses, improve productivity, and strengthen agrifood value chains.
