BestellBar

E-marketplace featuring local retailers from Rhineland-Palatinate digital villages

Description

BestellBar is a local online marketplace through which local vendors can sell their products online, combining the advantages of online shopping with those of shopping with local retailers. Retailers in the region can list the products that members of the public can order online, and those participating include organic farms, local bakeries, vegetable farmers and regular supermarkets, as well as vendors of non-food goods. Once an order is placed, the system arranges the delivery, and volunteers from the village can help bring them to the door of the client with the support of a specific mobile app (LieferBar).

Technology

  • E-commerce/online marketplace

BestellBar is an e-commerce accessible from mobile devices or computers. The webpage carries lists of offered products and suppliers, and provides information about the local villages that are involved. Users select their goods and pay for them online.

Target

  • Smallholder farmers
  • Rural communities
  • Food consumers

The users of BestellBar are residents of German villages who are experiencing the effects of demographic changes, the ageing population and the rural depopulation. They tend to endure low quality in the provision of public services, an absence of adequate digital infrastructures and reduced economic prosperity.

Business model

  • Fully free

BestellBar was developed within the scope of the “Digital Villages” project, funded by the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Interior and Sport, Fraunhofer IESE and the Rhineland-Palatinate Development Agency, with the intention being to meet the needs of local food producers and buyers, among others. It is free to use.

Impact

BestellBar allows for the more efficient marketing of local food producers, creating direct links with their customers, thus supporting short supply chains. Users have the opportunity to buy local, healthy food without having to physically visit the local marketplace.
