Copenhagen Food Cooperative (Københavns Fødevarefællesskab)
Cooperative member management and trading platform
DescriptionOverview of the initiative and its approach.
Copenhagen Food Cooperative (KBHFF) is a member-based and volunteer-driven food cooperative in Copenhagen, Denmark that facilitates direct access to locally produced organic and biodynamic fruit, vegetables and other food products through its website while strengthening community ties. Members can join and order their produce online. It serves both small producers and consumers seeking affordable organic food by organising weekly pre-ordered produce bags, communal pick-up points and cooperative decision-making. Members actively contribute labour and governance, helping reduce cost, build local food solidarity and address market access challenges faced by small growers and ethical consumers alike.
TechnologyTechnology used by the initiative.
KBHFF uses a web system that enables membership registration, weekly ordering of produce bags, dynamic content updates (e.g. news and events) and communication with cooperative members. The system integrates public website content with backend member management functionality, allowing producers to list products, members to manage orders and groups to coordinate logistics and payments. IT system—developed under an open-source licence—supports ordering, messaging, membership management and future expansion of payment options, reducing administrative burden and improving internal coordination.
TargetUsers, groups, or communities targeted by the initiative.
KBHFF purchases food specifically from small local organic farms and distributes produce to members through 9 branches around greater Copenhagen.
Business modelHow the initiative delivers and sustains its value.
KBHFF is funded by membership fees. In addition to membership fees, members pre-pay their weekly orders for a season ahead. Price of the weekly produce bag includes a markup to cover the cost of the logistics and administrative work.
ImpactThe observed or intended effects of the initiative.
KBHFF aims to enhance local food access, community engagement and producer–consumer relationships in and around Copenhagen. As a cooperative model, it lowers costs for members by combining purchasing power with volunteer labour and prioritising organic and biodynamic products, sourced directly from small Danish farms. According to the KBHFF website, it supports hundreds of weekly vegetable and fruit distributions, encourages shared responsibility and promotes sustainable consumption patterns.
