Farmable

Mobile farming app boosting tree crop yields and reducing waste

Description

Farmable is a mobile app designed in Norway specifically for “top” fruit, being fruit grown on trees such as apples and pears. All data from field operations are collected in one place and form the basis of a digital model for the farm that supports decision-making. The benefits to the grower include: 1) crop treatment suggestions and access a spray calculator that specifies the amount of product needed; 2) a job management function that uses global positioning system (GPS) technologies to track spraying in the field and to log activities automatically; 3) the easy identification of issues in the field from app’s field notes, which can be shared with agronomists or other team members along with GPS coordinates; and 4) harvest logging, allowing the user to track the yields of trees at a block level.

Technology

  • Cloud
  • Desktop/web-based application
  • Mobile app
  • GPS

Farmable allows tree crop growers to track, monitor and record operations via a mobile app. Data is gathered in the field and manually entered into the app, giving orchard managers a real-time overview of activities. With this data, they can make sound decisions to enhance productivity and efficiency. The app also generates a database of records to simplify reporting to authorities and marketing organisations.

Target

  • Large size farms
  • Medium size farms
  • Smallholder farmers

The main users of Farmable are farmers. Over 40 000 farms are reported to be using the app as of July 2024.

Business model

  • Freemium
  • Subscription

Farmable is a freely available mobile app for both iOS and Android devices, with more advanced features accessible for a fee. Farmable Pro costs EUR 99/year/farm (as of July 2024), while Multi-Farm, which supports the management of multiple farms through a dedicated dashboard, may be priced differently. Subscribing to any of Farmable’s add-on functionalities will earn the customer access to a 15-day free trial, after which the official subscription period will start. All Farmable modules are provided under a 12-month subscription that starts on the date the trial period ends.

Impact

The Farmable app tracks orchard inputs down to the row level, giving growers more precise control of their water, energy, fertiliser and pesticide inputs, while increasing crop yields, thus contributing to the nutritional needs of the growing population. Farmable also enhances efficiency by cutting down on environmental waste, as well as water and energy inputs. Furthermore, the use of fertilizer and pesticides is reduced, lowering the risk of potentially harmful runoff. In addition, human resources and logistics can be optimized, eliminating the unnecessary use of energy-consuming vehicles and equipment, all of which contribute to greater profits.
