FitoWise

Greenhouse monitoring and optimization using digital technologies

Description

The FitoWise project is an initiative funded by EIT Food (and co-financed by the European Union) aimed at helping greenhouse farmers produce higher-quality vegetables with more predictable yields.

Technology

  • Artificial intelligence (AI)
  • Internet of things (IoT)
  • Artificial intelligence (AI)

FitoWise combines IoT sensors, drainage water scales, and AI-powered image analysis to support greenhouse management. Sensors monitor environmental parameters such as temperature, humidity, and light, while drainage water scales assess water content and quality to optimize irrigation. Image capture and software analysis track plant growth and health. The system was tested in greenhouses in Greece and Hungary, with Life Cycle Assessment applied to evaluate its environmental impact and ensure sustainable integration.

Target

  • Agriculture cooperatives
  • Farm advisors
  • Large size farms
  • Medium size farms
  • Smallholder farmers

FitoWise primarily targets greenhouse vegetable producers and horticultural farms, as well as cooperatives and farm advisors supporting greenhouse operations.

Business model

  • Donor support

During the project period, development and piloting were donor-funded through EIT Food, project ID 24142, and EU co-funding, implemented by a consortium including Sys-Control, Bakó Kertészeti Kft., Agricultural University of Athens and Campden BRI Hungary. After the project’s end, public materials indicate the results are positioned for continued use and rollout through the involved industry partners.

Impact

FitoWise aims to improve greenhouse cultivation outcomes by enabling earlier intervention and more data-driven decisions that support higher yields, healthier crops and improved water management. By combining continuous monitoring with analytics, the solution is intended to reduce resource waste and strengthen the sustainability and predictability of greenhouse production.
