Knowledge4Policy (K4P)

EU Commission’s platform for evidence-based policymaking

Description

Knowledge4Policy is a web-based evidence platform designed to organise, synthesise and deliver scientifically robust knowledge from JRC-led ‘knowledge services’. These services are comprised of 26 themes that organise, tailor, and present scientific knowledge to directly inform policymaking and related research. Some of the thematic areas include biodiversity, global food and nutrition security, earth observation, and health promotion and disease prevention among others. Other knowledge services outside agriculture and digital infrastructure organize data on migration and demography, participatory democracy, cancer research, and disaster risk management. The solution also provides policymakers across Europe with a shared database, policy‑layer interfaces and evolving online communities, bridging the science–policy gap and supporting evidence‑informed decision‑making. Additionally, an online community where scientists and policymakers are also established to collaborate in transferring scientific knowledge into public policy.

Technology

  • Artificial intelligence (AI)
  • Desktop/web-based application
  • Online community

Knowledge4Policy is implemented on the European Commission’s open-source Open EUROPA Drupal platform and Europa Component Library, publishing into a single shared knowledgebase with search, taxonomy and service‑specific filters. The platform architecture underpins tailored ‘topics and tools’ for policy audiences and community features. Users can browse the knowledge base and platform through filters such as events, news, organisations, and resources.
