Description
Planet is a satellite-based Earth observation solution that provides high-frequency, high-resolution imagery to monitor agricultural landscapes worldwide. The initiative addresses the challenge of limited access to timely and accurate agricultural data by offering continuous satellite monitoring that supports crop forecasting, land use management and disaster preparedness.
Technology
Planet relies on a fleet of Earth observation satellites, including Dove, SkySat and RapidEye constellations, which capture daily imagery at various resolutions. The data are processed through cloud-based infrastructure and made available via web-based platforms and APIs. The technology integrates remote sensing, GIS and machine learning tools to analyze vegetation indices, detect crop stress, and provide near real-time agricultural monitoring.
Target
The main users of the Planet platform include public sector agencies, research institutions, agribusinesses, and farm advisors who rely on continuous satellite data for crop monitoring and land use planning. Smallholder farmers and rural communities benefit indirectly when agricultural extension services, governments and private actors use the imagery to support early warning systems, resource allocation and climate resilience initiatives.
Business model
Planet operates on a subscription-based business model in which clients, such as governments, research institutions and agribusinesses, pay for access to satellite imagery and analytical services. The company also provides fee-for-service contracts for customized monitoring solutions.
Impact
The initiative aims to improve agricultural productivity, strengthen climate resilience and support global food security by providing reliable satellite data. Planet’s monitoring capacity covers over 190 countries, with more than 1 700 satellites launched to date, enabling daily revisits of agricultural land. The data have been applied in projects on crop yield forecasting, deforestation monitoring and disaster response, contributing to evidence-based decision-making for food and agriculture stakeholders.
