Planetary Health Check (prev. Earth HQ) blends near real-time data with environmental science journalism and multimedia storytelling, providing users with access to the latest data and insights into common global issues – climate, freshwater, forest, ocean, and biodiversity. Planetary Health Check is the media arm of the Global Commons Alliance – a large coalition of scientific and conservation organizations that is sponsored by Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.
Technology
The platform is undergoing beta testing as of July 2024. The key features include: 1) Virtual Earth Display – a dazzling virtual Earth offering dozens of visualized near-real time data sets, mapping the state of the planet; 2) Climate Alerts – daily headlines that guide users to the latest climatic impacts and phenomena occurring around the world; 3) Data Highlights – a quick guide to some of the most insightful data visualizations tracking planetary emergencies; 4) Advanced Menu – an Earth dashboard for those who want to explore the full array of visualized data available on the platform; 5) Breaking News – organized around each of the global commons, delivering the latest news from the media partners; and 6) Shareability – every screen view of Earth HQ can be shared by copying the URL and disseminated via email or social media. The platform uses machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to analyse trends, predict environmental crises and process imagery.

The main users are the general public, including journalists, students, activists and anyone with an interest in the planet.
Business model
The data engine is provided by earth.nullschool.net – a visualization engine for the display of near real-time global meteorological and biological data. Project management and data integrity is provided by Resource Watch under the World Resources Institute through an open-source platform draws from hundreds of visualized data sets produced by the world’s most reliable sources. Environmental journalism is provided by Planetary Health Check media partners.
