WaterWorld

Policy support system

Description

WaterWorld is a web-based policy support resource designed to analyse water resources, hydrological baselines and water-related risks under current conditions and alternative land-use and climate scenarios. It supports assessment of intended and unintended impacts of land and water policies at local, national and global scales.

Technology

  • Desktop/web-based application
  • GIS
  • Remote sensing

WaterWorld uses process-based hydrological modelling with global and regional spatial datasets, including remote-sensing-derived layers, to run baseline and scenario analyses for climate and land-use change. Outputs are delivered through a web interface and can be exported for use in other analytical tools and geospatial platforms.

Target

  • Academia and research institutions
  • Civil society organizations
  • Private sector
  • Public sector

WaterWorld is used by public institutions, researchers and technical analysts involved in water resources assessment, water security and land-use policy analysis at multiple scales.

Business model

  • Fully free

WaterWorld provides free access for non-commercial and research use through account registration, while advanced usage and dedicated deployments are offered under licence

Impact

WaterWorld has been applied in a wide range of policy and research contexts to support baseline and scenario analysis of water quantity, erosion risk and water-related ecosystem services under land-use and climate change scenarios. Public documentation presents numerous global and regional application examples across sectors such as land management, conservation, and infrastructure planning.
