Description
GFarm for LIFE (Green Farm) is a LIFE Programme project that aims to develop Lithuania's national digital ecosystem for monitoring greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and carbon sequestration in the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector. The project is developing a monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) framework, a national carbon register, and digital tools that combine Earth observation, farm-level data, soil and forestry information, and geospatial analytics to support carbon farming, carbon removal certification, and evidence-based climate policy. The platform is intended to help farmers, policymakers, and public authorities assess emissions and carbon sequestration, support future carbon markets, and align Lithuania's agricultural sector with emerging EU carbon certification regulations.

GFarm combines Copernicus Earth observation data, GIS, soil and forestry monitoring databases, farm-level management data, greenhouse gas accounting models, MRV methodologies, and cross-platform digital tools to monitor emissions and carbon sequestration across the AFOLU sector. The project is developing a national carbon register and interoperable data infrastructure capable of exchanging information with public agricultural information systems and supporting future carbon certification schemes.

GFarm for LIFE is funded under the EU LIFE Programme, with a total budget of approximately EUR 2.67 million, running from 2023 to 2026. As a research and demonstration project, it is not yet a permanent government information system; future operational deployment will depend on national adoption following project completion.
Impact
The project aims to establish Lithuania's first integrated national framework for measuring, reporting, and verifying greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration in agriculture and forestry, enabling carbon farming, supporting implementation of the EU Carbon Removal Certification Framework, improving climate-related decision-making, and creating the foundations for future carbon credit markets and incentive mechanisms.
