Agri-calculators

Fertilizer, irrigation, water and seed calculators

DescriptionOverview of the initiative and its approach.

Agri-calculators are an online tool for the calculation of the inputs necessary to grow vegetables. Three modules are available: a seed and seedling calculator; an irrigation water calculator; and a fertilizer calculator. The app has models for six types of crops, including tomato, cucumber, cabbage, eggplant, radish and carrot. The user provides details of the farm and planting, and the system then calculates the necessary inputs. Agri-calculators is part of the Agro Space suite of apps developed jointly by AgroInformAsia, Kyrgyzstan and AgroInform.TJ in Tajikistan as a hub for the hosting of various digital products developed for farmers.

TechnologyTechnology used by the initiative.

  • Desktop/web-based application

Agri-calculators can be accessed online in the following languages: Russian, Kyrgyz, Tajik and English. The calculators use agronomic models to calculate the quantities of seeds and seedlings, fertilizers and irrigation water required to cultivate crops, taking into account specified farm data.

TargetUsers, groups, or communities targeted by the initiative.

  • Smallholder farmers
  • Medium size farms
  • Large size farms
  • Farm advisors

The main users of the app are farmers, and only basic computer skills are required. The Agro Space website claims that around 3000 farmers make use of the calculators each year.

Business modelHow the initiative delivers and sustains its value.

  • Advertising

Agri-calculators can be accessed for free. The web-based app features two types of in-app advertising: Google Ads, and an embedded module for the posting of advertisements. Posting an ad costs USD 5/month or 25 USD/year (as of December 2022).

ImpactThe observed or intended effects of the initiative.

Agri-calculators assist farmers in calculating the required quantities of seeds and seedlings, fertilizers and water for the cultivation of crops, thereby facilitating effective planning and preventing the excessive and unnecessary use of inputs. This can help farmers reduce their production costs and increase their profits, while at the same time reducing the impact of their agricultural activities on the environment.
