Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS)

Inter-agency platform enhancing food market transparency

Description

AMIS is an inter-agency platform enabling users to monitor the market and visualize global food supply and demand for four staple crops: wheat, maize, rice, and soybeans. The platform features market and policy databases, and statistics on crops and fertilizers. Additionally, AMIS also provides an opportunity for end-users to monitor crops, policy developments, market changes, international prices, as well as future market trends.

Technology

  • Big data
  • Cloud
  • Desktop/web-based application

AMIS is accessible through the web browser. The platform consolidates and analyzes data on global production, stocks, trade, demand, consumption, and prices of key food commodities. The technical experts from participating countries jointly working as the Global Food Market Information Group consolidate these data.

Target

  • Academia and research institutions
  • Civil society organizations
  • Private sector
  • Public sector
  • Farm advisors

The primary users of AMIS include policymakers, researchers, and analysts from participating countries and international organizations. The participating nations represent a large share of global production, consumption and trade volumes of the targeted crops, and include G20 members plus Spain and eight additional major exporting and importing countries.

Business model

  • Fully free
  • Donor support

AMIS operates as a publicly funded initiative, offering free access to its data and analyses. It is supported by contributions from participating countries and partner organizations, ensuring that its resources are openly available to all stakeholders without cost.

Impact

AMIS prevents unexpected price hikes and strengthens global food security which was demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. The initiative produced several publications and handbooks on indicators and market prices, AMIS crop calendars, market studies, and supply-utilization accounts, among others.
