Description

Atfarm is a digital satellite-based tool that enables farmers and advisors to monitor crop biomass and plan nitrogen fertilization with precision. The platform provides access to recent satellite imagery to track crop development, generate NDVI and biomass maps, and create variable rate nitrogen application maps. Users can export application maps for use with compatible machinery or adjust rates manually via mobile app. These functionalities could improve yields and reduce environmental impact.

Atfarm is a cloud-based crop monitoring platform, accessible via web and mobile apps. It allows farmers to draw or upload field boundaries (including shapefiles) and uses satellite imagery processed with the Yara N-Sensor algorithm to produce biomass maps and generate field-specific variable-rate nitrogen application maps. Data processing takes place on Yara’s servers, and outputs can be exported in formats compatible with certain farm systems. Additional features include in-season nitrogen measurement with N-Tester BT and smartphone-based tools in supported regions.

Target

  • Agriculture cooperatives
  • Farm advisors
  • Large size farms
  • Medium size farms
  • Private sector
  • Smallholder farmers

The main users of Atfarm are farmers of all sizes, especially smallholder and medium-scale producers. Farm advisors and cooperatives also use the platform to support data-driven decision-making. As of July 2025, Atfarm has over 100 000 users globally, and 10 million hectares registered.

Business model

  • Freemium
  • Fully free

Platform pricing depends on country, scale of use, and crop type. In some countries, such as Czechia, Atfarm is offered free including advanced features like variable rate application (VRA) mapping. Further, Yara generates revenue from these premium services and collaborates with partners such as John Deere for integration services.

Impact

Atfarm aims to improve nitrogen use efficiency by enabling precise fertilizer application, which reduces input costs and environmental runoff. The platform could enhance decision-making and supports climate-smart agriculture. A potential drawback could be the reliance on internet connectivity and digital literacy, which may limit accessibility for some rural users.
