Mobile application for the management of beekeeping operations
Description
The Beekeeper's Companion is a mobile application developed by HiveTracks to provide both experienced and new beekeepers with an innovative means of managing their beekeeping operations. The app facilitates the tracking of hive histories, including the health and productivity of the bees, provides immediate and long-term weather forecasts, guides the user through the hive inspection process, etc. Combining these multiple functions in one app supports the user in making informed decisions throughout the season and year in beekeeping practice.
Technology
The Beekeeper’s Companion App can be accessed through smartphones and tablets, and supports the use of scientific knowledge and data in practical applications. The app’s functionality is informed by scientific research, the expertise of different beekeepers and the user’s own data. HiveTracks has been in contact with 40 000 beekeepers in more than 150 countries to gain the necessary knowledge and experience for the creation of the app. This base allows to guide complicated technical processes such as hive inspections, as well as to provide seasonal and personal recommendations.
Target
All beekeepers are the target users of the app, regardless of their experience. The app has the potential for wide outreach, being available in the English, Spanish, Uzbek, Russian, Amharic and Arabic/Lebanese languages. In 2017, the company partnered with ICARDA to further develop and test the app with beekeepers and experts in Uzbekistan and Ethiopia, notably working with 20 female beekeepers in Tashkent and Bukhara. The app was translated into Uzbek and Russian, utilizing a gender-inclusive and localized language.
Business model
The app can be freely downloaded to personal devices from the Apple App or Google Play Stores. Each new user can enjoy a 30-day free trial at the time of sign-up after selecting the preferred monthly or annual billing option, after which use of the app is charged at USD 8.99/month or USD 79.99/year.
Impact
The Beekeeper’s Companion contributes to healthier bees and better honey production through complete hive management, thorough and sound hive inspections, and access to relevant and reliable information.
