BluLeaf

Decision Support System (DSS)

Description

BluLeaf is a modular, cloud-based precision agriculture platform that integrates data from sensors, weather stations and satellite imagery to optimize farm operations as irrigation scheduling, fertilization planning and crop monitoring, helping farmers and advisors improve resource efficiency, reduce input use and enhance sustainability in agricultural production. It integrates multiple components: 1) BluLeaf DSS, a decision support for irrigation, nutrition, and crop protection, 2) BluLeaf QMS, a quality management tools for ensuring compliance of products and industrial processes, 3) BluLeaf LAB , a software for laboratory analysis instruments, 4) BluLeaf IoT, a rental and maintenance of professional agricultural sensors and 5)BluLeaf FMIS, a farm management information system for large-scale data integration.

Technology

  • Big data
  • Cloud
  • Desktop/web-based application
  • GIS
  • GPS
  • Internet of things (IoT)
  • Mobile app
  • Sensor

BluLeaf operates as a cloud-based Decision Support System accessible via web and mobile applications (iOS/Android). For the initiative's DSS functions, the solution integrates in-field sensors measuring soil moisture, electrical conductivity (EC), and temperature, alongside weather data and predictive agronomic models, to provide crop- and field-specific recommendations. Data is processed centrally and made available to users through interactive dashboards, alerts, and analytics tools. Additional modules expand its scope to quality management, laboratory data handling, IoT hardware integration, and large-scale farm data consolidation.

Target

  • Agriculture cooperatives
  • Farm advisors
  • Large size farms
  • Medium size farms
  • Smallholder farmers
  • Private sector

BluLeaf primarily serves small and medium-sized farms in Italy, providing decision support for irrigation, fertilization and crop monitoring. It is also used by advisors, cooperatives and larger enterprises to manage multiple holdings, ensure regulatory compliance and improve quality and efficiency across operations. As of July 2025, the platform has more than 2000 active accounts.

Business model

  • Freemium

The mobile app is free to download on Android and iOS, supporting a freemium approach. Basic access is provided without charge, while certain advanced features, modules, or sensor integrations may require project-based fees or subscription arrangements. No standardized public pricing is disclosed.

Impact

BluLeaf aims to improve water and nutrient use efficiency, reduce nitrate leaching, and support climate-resilient farming through data-driven decision-making. As per a publication published in 2019, the benefits from field trials include water savings of around 25 percent. The modular design could allow farms and organizations to adopt only the components relevant to their needs. A potential barrier could be digital adoption in low-tech user groups, addressed via advisory and cooperative-led support.
