Integrated Natural Resources Management in Drought-prone and Salt-affected Agricultural Production Landscapes in Central Asia and Turkey

The “Integrated Natural Resource Management in Drought-Prone and Saline Agricultural Production Landscapes of Central Asia and Turkey” (CACILM-2) project implemented by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Global Environment Facility (GEF) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Centre of Hydrometeorological Service of the Republic of Uzbekistan aimed at enhancing data-driven farming decisions based on agrometeorological observations in Uzbekistan. In 2020, FAO transferred 12 modern automatic agrometeorological stations to Centre of Hydrometeorological Service, which were installed in the agricultural territories of Jizzakh and Kashkadarya regions. Training sessions have been organized for regional hydrometeorology specialists to ensure effective utilization of the new stations.

Twelve agro-meteorological stations transmit data to cloud system. The system allows to store, analyse and visualise agro-meteorological data and use it for real-time monitoring and short and long-term forecasting. The stations combine with the use of sensors, remote sensing, GPS/GIS technologies, cloud, and big data.

The primary beneficiaries are expected to be the farmers, notably smallholders, in Jizzakh and Kashkadarya regions of Uzbekistan. The initiative focuses on providing accurate agrometeorological information to empower farmers in making informed decisions for crop cultivation, pest management, and overall agricultural planning.

Impact

The implementation of automatic agrometeorological stations in Uzbekistan is expected to yield concrete positive outcomes and impacts. Farmers, particularly smallholders, stand to benefit from timely and accurate weather and climate information. The stations enable proactive decision-making in daily operations and long-term planning, leading to enhanced agricultural practices. This empowerment is anticipated to reduce risks associated with crop yields, improve resource utilization (such as pesticides), and contribute to sustainable farming. Additionally, the initiative aligns with broader goals of integrated natural resource management and supports the UN Convention to Combat Desertification and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in the Central Asian region. Overall, the positive outcomes include increased resilience in the agricultural sector, improved livelihoods for farmers, and progress toward environmental sustainability.
