CHAMELEON

Integrated onboard-AI drones for agriculture, livestock, forestry, pest management

Description

CHAMELEON is a Horizon Europe project using integrated drone-based technology to support data-driven decision-making in agriculture, livestock, forestry and pest management. In agriculture, the project focuses on CO₂ sequestration and biomass estimation, as well as irrigation, water-stress monitoring and management. In livestock, it supports behavioural analysis and protection of animals, including early and non-intrusive lameness detection. In forestry, the solution develops a plant health assessment toolkit. For pest management, it tests selective spraying applications for low-risk fertilization and forest health protection.

Technology

  • Artificial intelligence (AI)
  • Big data
  • Cloud
  • GIS
  • GPS
  • Drone
  • Internet of things (IoT)
  • Desktop/web-based application
  • Artificial intelligence (AI)
  • Remote sensing
  • Sensor

CHAMELEON combines UAV hardware with AI and cloud-based analytics. The project uses drones equipped with sensors, GPS and remote-sensing tools to collect field data, which are processed through a data and AI platform. Through a web-based dashboard, users can view maps and results, download datasets and reports, and work with GIS-based data to compare areas over time and support management decisions.

Target

  • Academia and research institutions
  • Agriculture cooperatives
  • Farm advisors
  • Large size farms
  • Medium size farms
  • Smallholder farmers
  • Rural communities

CHAMELEON mainly serves academia and research institutions, SMEs and public authorities in agriculture, forestry and livestock. Large and medium farms benefit directly, while smallholders may gain indirect access through pilot results.

Business model

  • Donor support
  • Fully free

CHAMELEON is an EU-funded Horizon Europe project, Grant Agreement ID 101060529, operating through a consortium of 12 partners across 9 European countries, including 6 SMEs, 3 universities and 3 end users. With a total budget of EUR 6 million, the project applies a collaborative model with pilots in Spain, Greece and Austria, and two open calls for SMEs to develop AI-supported solutions with financial, technical and business mentorship.

Impact

CHAMELEON aims to promote innovation, optimize production and identify potential problems in agriculture, livestock, forestry and rural areas. According to the resources online digitalization of surveillance and management processes can reduce costs by up to 10 percent, minimizing losses from diseases and poor practices.
