Mobile application for the detection of disease in plants and treatment recommendations

Description

DoctorP is a mobile application that helps farmers and other users identify diseases in plants from photographs and provides treatment recommendations. The app currently supports the identification of multiple diseases in decorative houseplants and the following 12 crops: apples, barberry, cherry, cotton, wheat, corn, hemp, cucumber, grapes, tomato, strawberry and pepper. The app can also identify common diseases that are not limited to a specific crop.

The app interface allows users to take photos of the leaves of an affected plant using an Internet-connected mobile device. A computer then processes the graphic information and any other information provided by the user to find similar entries on a database of over 40 diseases and pests. The technology behind the process is a neural network – a machine learning process that teaches computers to process data and recognize patterns. The application works based on two models. In the first model, the app identifies the three diseases closest to the provided data, and the user selects the best match from the suggested options. The app then describes the disease and provides treatment recommendations. The database contains information about decorative plants and 12 crops, over 100 types of diseases and over 4000 images. In the second model, the app evaluates the photo based on a crop-specific model that can determine the type of crop and crop-specific diseases. Similar to the first model, the app provides a description of the disease and treatment recommendations. The user can decide if any of the suggestions are correct. The app is available in English and Russian, with more specific treatment recommendations made in Russian, and even specific products. In English, the recommendations are less specific, indicating rather the active ingredients required in a treatment.  The app can be downloaded from the Google Play Store, and an iOS version is planned for 2023.

The interface is intuitive and does not require any advanced technical skills. The app is available in English and Russian. The application had received over 40 000 requests as of September 2022. Google Play statistics, between May 2022 and 30 September, 2022, the application was downloaded by users in various countries in Europe and Central Asia in the following numbers: Albania (7), Armenia (38), Azerbaijan (46), Belarus (365), Bosnia and Herzegovina (9), Georgia (34), Kazakhstan (210), Kyrgyzstan (32), Montenegro (-), North Macedonia (14), Republic of Moldova (45), Serbia (69), Tajikistan (22), Türkiye (30), Turkmenistan (58), Ukraine (721), and Uzbekistan (84).

The app is free to download and use and is under continuous development, with the addition of machine learning models and the expansion of the database.

Impact

DoctorP is an agricultural application with the ability to identify crop diseases in the early stages of production, allowing farmers to take necessary measures to prevent the spread of disease and protect their yield. User activity from 1 May 2022 to 30 September 2022 led to successful predictions in the following crops: apples (550), barberry (185), cherry (390), cotton (105), wheat (85), corn (250), hemp (80), cucumber (290), currants (195), grape (145), tomato (680), strawberry (350), pepper (50) and blueberry (110). The application and its machine learning algorithms are undergoing continuous improvement, and plans are in place to introduce a customized model for potato, barley, cabbage, raspberry, blackberry and salad in 2023.
