FarmDroid FD20

Solar-powered autonomous robot for seeding and weeding

Description

FarmDroid FD20 is a solar-powered autonomous field robot for precision seeding and mechanical weeding in row crops. It addresses challenges of labor shortages, high herbicide use, and soil compaction, offering an alternative suited to organic and conventional farming.

Technology

  • Cloud
  • Desktop/web-based application
  • GPS
  • Mobile app
  • Robotics

The FarmDroid FD20 is a solar-powered robotic platform that combines Real Time Kinematic GPS guidance with seeding and intra-row weeding functions. During sowing, the robot records the exact position of each seed and later removes weeds mechanically by cultivating areas where no crop seed was planted. This approach eliminates the need for optical vision or image recognition. The system operates for up to 24 hours on solar and battery power, covering about 6.5 hectares per day. A lightweight chassis reduces soil compaction, while operational data such as seed maps and error logs are stored in the cloud and accessible via mobile and web applications.

Target

  • Large size farms
  • Medium size farms

FarmDroid FD20 serves primarily to medium and large farms, especially in organic and high-value vegetable crops. According to the company’s website, as of September 2025, over 500 units are in use across 23+ countries, mostly in Europe.

Business model

  • One time purchase

FarmDroid FD20 is sold at a one-time purchase price ranging between EUR 75,000 to €97,000 plus VAT, with additional cost for RTK base station. The purchase includes access to monitoring tools via web and mobile applications and technical support.

Impact

FarmDroid FD20 aims to contribute to reduced labor for weeding, lower herbicide use, and CO₂-neutral field operations through solar power. Its lightweight design could help avoid soil compaction, supporting sustainable production practices.
