FoodCloud

Digital platform that facilitates the redistribution of surplus food

Description

FoodCloud is a digital platform that facilitates the redistribution of surplus food from food businesses to charities and community organizations. The solution aims to reduce food waste while supporting communities by improving access to surplus food that is safe for consumption.

Technology

  • Desktop/web-based application
  • Mobile app

FoodCloud operates the Foodiverse platform, which enables food donors to upload surplus food offers and allows charities and community groups to accept and confirm collections. The platform records donation data and supports operational and impact reporting.

Target

  • Civil society organizations
  • Private sector
  • Food consumers

FoodCloud primarily targets charities and community organisations that receive surplus food for redistribution to people in need, as well as private-sector food businesses that donate surplus food through the platform. The initiative also engages volunteers involved in coordinating and collecting food donations at local level.

Business model

  • Donor support
  • Fully free

FoodCloud operates through partnerships and donor-funded support, including multi-year funding partnerships and grant funding to develop Foodiverse. FoodCloud received more than EUR 500 000 in R&D funding from Enterprise Ireland’s Agile Innovation Fund to further develop Foodiverse.

Impact

According to the company website, FoodCloud facilitated the redistribution of surplus food in Ireland and internationally between 2014 and 1 December 2024. Over this period, approximately 338.9 million meal equivalents were redistributed through the platform, supported by 5,700 food-donating branches. FoodCloud also reports estimated avoidance of 425,528 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions associated with the diversion of surplus food from waste streams. These figures represent aggregated outputs reported by the organisation.
