Inspire Geoportal

European portal for geospatial data provided under the INSPIRE Directive

Description

The INSPIRE Geoportal is an online catalogue listing the national geoportals that are aligned with the INSPIRE Directive, and contains a specific section for agriculture-related geoportals in the European Union (e.g. IACS, LPIS). The Geoportal offers access to a vast collection of spatial data sets produced by various public authorities across Europe. Users can search, view and download geospatial information on such topics as environmental protection, land use, transportation, etc. The portal is designed to improve transparency, facilitate data sharing, and support decision-making related to geographic and environmental issues, and serves as a central access point for spatial data resources, making it easier for stakeholders, including researchers, policymakers and the general public, to access high-quality geographic data.

Technology

  • Big data
  • GIS
  • GPS
  • Artificial intelligence (AI)
  • Remote sensing
  • Website

The Geoportal is built on a combination of standards and technologies designed to facilitate the sharing, discovery and access of geospatial data across Europe. The portal uses such Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards as Web Map Service (WMS) and Web Feature Service (WFS) for the visual representation and querying of spatial data. It is also integrated with such metadata catalogue standards as ISO 19115 for the description of geographic information, and INSPIRE-specific metadata standards to ensure the uniformity and consistency of the data sets. The system supports interoperability by adhering to the INSPIRE Directive's technical guidelines, meaning that spatial data from different EU member states can be accessed and used seamlessly. The portal utilizes GeoNetwork, an open-source software, for the management of spatial metadata and for data discovery.

Target

  • Academia and research institutions
  • Civil society organizations
  • Farm advisors
  • Large size farms
  • Medium size farms
  • Public sector
  • Private sector

The target users of the INSPIRE Geoportal include the wide range of stakeholders involved in the use and analysis of geospatial data. These include policymakers and public authorities in European countries who are responsible for making make informed decisions related to environmental protection, land use and urban planning. Researchers and scientists can use the portal to access detailed spatial data for studies related to geography, climate and environmental issues. Additionally, private sector companies and consultants operating in such fields as transportation, agriculture and infrastructure can use the data for planning and development purposes. The portal is also useful for citizens and NGOs with an interest in environmental transparency or advocates of sustainable policies.

Business model

  • Fully free

The Geoportal is co-funded by the European Union and its Member States, as well as EFTA countries.

Impact

The INSPIRE Geoportal plays a central role in the European efforts to improve access to and the use of geospatial data across the Member States and EFTA countries. It supports the sharing of spatial data on a variety of topics, including environmental protection, transportation and urban planning. Recent monitoring reports claim that the portal has successfully facilitated the integration and dissemination of spatial data with significant participation from the European Union and EFTA countries. The portal has also been instrumental in providing public authorities, researchers and policymakers with access to essential data in support of their support decision-making processes related to sustainability and environmental governance
