Enhancing productivity and sustainability of irrigated agriculture in the Ararat and Armavir regions

Description

The IADAAM project provides support to the Government of Armenia in shaping policies aimed at the modernization of irrigated agriculture. It offers substantial assistance at the local level, particularly to farmers and stakeholders involved in designing, promoting, and financing pilot initiatives in the Ararat and Armavir marzes. The project also focuses on climate change adaptation, aiming to enhance the resilience of agricultural production against extreme weather events such as droughts, heavy rainfall, and hail. Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, IADAAM emphasizes the inclusion of women, young farmers, and youth through active engagement in project activities and access to grants. Key components of the initiative include technical assistance to the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Armenia, development of operational frameworks for investment grants, and support in communication and project management. Looking ahead, the project intends to promote the adoption of smart agriculture technologies and strengthen capacity within the farming community.

IADAAM is set to integrate a robust digital component into its framework, including the creation of a digital advisory platform designed to connect farmers with extension specialists and agronomists. The initiative encourages the adoption of smart agriculture technologies such as weather stations, soil moisture sensors, and digital farm management tools. To support effective use of these technologies, extension teams receive training to assist farmers in interpreting digital data and applying it to their day-to-day operations. This approach aims to make advanced agricultural solutions more accessible, particularly for smallholder farmers.

Target

  • Smallholder farmers

The target of the project are smallholder farmers in Ararat and Armavir regions, with a focus on those transitioning to high-value crops and modern irrigation systems. Besides this, the project will also support central and local government levels specialists, farmers’ groups and their professional organizations, agro-processors, exporters, suppliers of inputs, services and equipment from the private sector, as well as civil society and academia.

Impact

The project is expected to improve water use efficiency, increase crop yields and quality, and enhance farmers’ access to expert advice and market opportunities. By fostering the adoption of digital and smart agriculture practices, IADAAM aims to build resilience, support sustainable resource management, and strengthen the overall competitiveness of Armenia’s agricultural sector.
