Description
Matsmart is an e-marketplace for the sale of surplus Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), such as dry food and non-food products that have been taken off the shelves, due to, for example, packaging changes, seasonality, faulty production or an approaching “best before” date. The goods are sold at 20–90 percent of their retail prices, and include pantry goods but no fresh, chilled or frozen food. The goods on offer are constantly changing as the needs of producers to move different products change.
Technology
Matsmart is a direct-to-consumer (D2C) e-commerce business operating through a website. Registration is via email.
Target
The main users are food suppliers and consumers.
Business model
At the time of writing the minimum order value was SEK 299, excluding deposits and delivery fees, and there are currently no card fees for shopping. Customers can pay by credit card, Google Pay or Apple Pay through the Matsmart website, and deliveries are made once a month. Matsmart offers three different subscriptions to its member companies, depending on size: SEK 1000/month (excl. VAT) for small companies (up to 20 employees); SEK 2500/month (excl. VAT) for medium companies (21–60 employees) and SEK 4000/month (excl. VAT) for large companies (61–100 employees)
Impact
Matsmart addresses the growing problem of food waste as a channel for the redistribution of goods that would otherwise be discarded. The model resolves the overstock problems of suppliers by selling food at low cost to customers, contributing also to reductions in waste and increased gross margins.
